News Story 1

To determine whether to overturn the principal’s decision on Junior Jim Stack’s hair, the school will vote Monday night at 7 P.M. on Stack’s request to grow his hair out to donate to a charity.

“Donating my hair to Locks of Love is a very special project to me,” Stack said. “I hope I can inspire people in the town to grow their hair out and donate it.”

Principal Tonya King denied Stack’s request to donate to Locks of Love, an organization that makes wigs for people with cancer, because male hair past their collar breaks the dress code.

“Had I approved Jim’s request, then I would have students every day asking if they could break the dress code,” King said.

According to Locks of Love’s president Gisel Roco, many people donate money, but not many people donate hair. They claim to have 200 requests each month and they have to turn down 150 of those requests because of lack of hair for their wigs.

“We desperately need human hair for our wigs,” Roco said.

Although Bill Valdez, school board president, cannot comment on the issue, he did say that the letter was well-written and had some good points. He has also known the Stack family for 20 years.

“I cannot comment on the issue,” Valdez said. “We were all relieved when Jasmine [Stack’s sister] recovered and the doctors said the cancer was gone.”

Locks of Love wrote a letter that showed he applied to be a donor and he had permission from his parents. Gilbert Castillo, student council president, supports Jim’s request. In fact, the student council also wrote a letter to support Stack. 350 students signed the letter, and 150 of those were willing to grow their hair for Locks of Love too.

“Rules were made to be broken, and this is a very good reason to break one,” Castillo said.
